Forgive for Joy's Sake (Part 2)
“She’s not answering her phone. My daughter can be quite stubborn when she wants to be.” Vivica told Mel’s brother, Wes, as they stood outside of her hospital room. They had stepped out so they could have a private conversation. “I can’t text her this. This is something that needs to be said in person. Though I can’t believe it needs to be said. I still can’t believe Jackson is gone.” Vivica opened her purse and grabbed a tissue to wipe the tears that were running down her cheeks.
Wes pulled her into his arms and allowed her to cry into his chest. “I can’t believe it either, but while there is nothing we can do for him, we have to do everything we can for Mel.”
“I agree, but her request to see Joy before she goes in for her operation in the morning may be a hard one to fill.” She pulled away from his embrace. “While I know you want to do everything you can for Mel, this may be beyond you.”
“You and Joy are like family and no matter what, when the chips are down family comes together. I’m sorry that Mel’s actions have caused a rift, but now we know that it may have not been all her fault. That car accident cost Jackson his life, but it may have saved Mel’s. The tumor in her head… The doctors only discovered it because of the accident and they said that if it had gotten any bigger, she would have died. My niece has lost her father, we have to do everything in our power to make sure she doesn’t lose her mother too. If that means I have to drag Joy down here myself to give Mel peace of mind before her surgery then so be it.” Wes turns and looks her straight in the eyes. “Now I understand why you are hesitant to give me her number or address, but you haven’t been able to get her all afternoon. We only have a small window of opportunity here, and I’m concerned that Mel is saying she won’t go into surgery unless she speaks to Joy first.”
Wes put his hand on Vivica’s arm. “Please, give me her address so I can go get her. Let me do this for my sister and my niece. You know I care for Joy and would do the same for her if the shoe was on the other foot.”
Vivica sighed and then lifted her phone and began to text. Wes’ phone binged. “I texted you her number and address. She is going to kill me, but I think that under the circumstances I had no choice.”
“Thank you. Can you stay here with Mel until I get back? I don’t want to leave her alone,” he said as he headed for the elevator.
“Of course, I will. Good luck,” she called to him, knowing he was going to need it. “I did the right thing,” she mumbled to herself before entering Mel’s room.
