Signature Scent
How fair is thy love, my sister, my spouse! How much better is thy love than wine! And the smell of thine ointments than all spices! (Song of Solomon 4:10 KJV)
You Remind Me Of
A few years back I experienced the power of a woman having a signature scent. I was shopping with one of my cousins in D.C. We were in Sephora, both hoping to find a fragrance we loved.
There we were sniffing and sniffing. Some of the scents crinkled our noses and some made us lift our eyebrows and nod maybe. After a while I gave up and walked away to look around the store. My cousin was a little more determined than I was and brought over three strips with three different scents.
“What do you think of these?” She asked me.
I took them and when I got to the third strip and sniffed, instantly the image of my Aunt Connie popped in my head. Memories of her flooded in and though she had passed many years before, it was as if she had entered the room and filled it with her signature scent. The memories of her great hugs, loving kindness and beautiful smile filled my mind.
“Doesn’t this fragrance remind you of Aunt Connie? I asked my cousin. She sniffed it again, but it didn’t have the same affect on her. I chalked it up to her being too young at the time to recall how she smelled. We weren’t sure which perfume it was because so many had been sprayed on little strips that recalling exactly which one reminded me of Aunt Connie wasn’t possible.
I could have gone and sniffed the ones she thought it could be, but quickly realized it didn’t matter. The point of what I learned is that with the right signature scent I may be able to spark a, hopefully pleasant, memory of me long after I’m gone. Even better, maybe once my son is grown and living in his purpose he’ll smells something that reminds him of my signature scent that will prompt him to give his Mom a call.
I’m on the hunt for a clean, sweet, fragrance that I love, for my everyday signature scent, but I have yet to fall in love with one. Are you someone who has a signature scent or are you someone who likes to chose a different perfume daily?
Be blessed,
Jenetta
